Delaying New Born’s First Bath Boosts Child Health

Strange as it may sound, researchers exploring the benefits of the white, waxy substance that coats a newborn’s skin, said delaying their first bath could promote infant health, breastfeeding, and mother-baby bonding. The findings of a research show that the substance, called vernix contains antimicrobial proteins that are active against group B strep, E. coli and other common perinatal risks.

Speaking about the white, waxy substance, which is often washed off too hastily after delivery, nurse and researcher, Courtney Buss, said: “You figure it was there for a reason but I never knew it was so amazing for the baby.”

The ‘Chicago Tribune’ reported that now Buss’ Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin in Illinois, United States, U.S., along with five other hospitals out of Chicago’s Advocate hospital system, are adopting a “wait to bathe” policy prompted by Buss’s research on outcomes as part of a fellowship for studying best practices.

“All of our Advocate Health Care hospitals are in various stages of implementing this policy/process,” a hospital spokesperson stated, adding, “I believe seven are doing it and the other three will be on-boarded by this summer and fall.”

The idea of delaying bathing is not new, and one that’s recommended as a standard of care by the World Health Organisation, WHO, which advises, “Bathing should be delayed until after 24 hours of birth. If this is not possible due to cultural reasons, bathing should be delayed for at least six hours.

Appropriate clothing of the baby for ambient temperature is recommended, however. This means one to two layers of clothes more than adults, and use of hats/ caps.

The mother and baby should not be separated and should stay in the same room 24 hours a day.” Among Buss’ powerful findings: The percentage of babies with hypothermia decreased from 29 per cent to 14 per cent after baths were delayed (rather than given immediately, because of a misperception that newborns are “dirty”).

Hypothermia is a medical emergency that occurs when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature.

E-cigarettes Potentially As Harmful As Tobacco

With many smokers switching to electronic cigarettes, hoping they would be less harmful than tobacco cigarettes, a new study has affirmed that e-cigarettes are potentially as harmful as tobacco cigarettes.

Using a new testing device, researchers from the University of Connecticut in the United States, U.S., found that e-cigarettes with a nicotine- based liquid could damage DNA as much as unfiltered cigarettes.

The findings which are published in the journal ‘ACS Sensors’, also found that cellular mutations caused by DNA damage can lead to cancer. An electronic cigarette or e-cigarette is a handheld electronic device that creates an aerosol by heating a liquid.

The user then inhales the aerosol. Using e-cigarettes is sometimes called vaping.

The new testing device also discovered the vapour from non-nicotine ecigarettes caused as much DNA damage as filtered cigarettes, probably due to the numerous chemical additives in the vapours.

According to study’s lead author, Karteek Kadimisetty, the amount of DNA damage e-cigarettes cause depends on the amount of vapour the user inhales, the other additives present, whether nicotine or non-nicotine liquid is used, and other factors.

However, to explore whether or not the chemicals in e-cigarettes could damage DNA, the researchers used a device they developed that can quickly detect DNA damage. T he ‘newsmax’ reported that the device uses micropumps to push liquid samples across multiple “microwells” embedded in a small carbon chip.

The wells are pre-loaded with reactive human metabolic enzymes and DNA. As the samples drop into the wells, new metabolites that have the potential to cause DNA damage are formed.

Kadimisetty said that by converting chemicals into their metabolites during testing, it replicates what happens in the human body.

Reactions between the metabolites and the DNA generate light that is photographed, and within five minutes, researchers can see how much DNA damage is done to a sample. “Some people use ecigarettes heavily because they think there is no harm,

“We wanted to see exactly what might be happening to DNA,” he said.

Global Alert: Obesity Growing Worldewide

A new study has shown that one doesn’t have to be diagnosed as obese to be at risk of dying from illnesses related to excess weight. According to a new study published in the ‘New England Journal of Medicine’, more than one in 10 people worldwide are now obese, with weight-related health problems claiming millions of lives every year.

The study found that more than 2 billion children and adults suffered from health problems linked to being overweight, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers, an increasing percentage had a body mass index (BMI) of less than 30, the The Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has disowned a phoney conversation circulating on social media purporting to be a phone call between him and Alhaji Kashim Shettima, the Governor of Borno State.

In what is turning out to be one of the most vicious and ungodly acts, meant to further create confusion in the land, a 20:38 (twenty minutes and thirty eight seconds) telephone conversation, purportedly be threshold for obesity.

Of the four million deaths attributed to being overweight in 2015, nearly 40 per cent were not considered clinically obese. People are generally considered obese when their body mass index (BMI), a measurement obtained by dividing a person’s weight by the square of the person’s height, is over30 kg/ m2, with the range25–30 kg/m2 defined as overweight.

Obesity is most commonly caused by a combination of excessive food intake, lack of physical activity, and genetic susceptibility. A few cases are caused primarily by genes, endocrine disorders, medications, or mental disorder. The ‘bbc’ reported that the findings highlighted “a growing and disturbing global public health crisis”.

The author of the study and director of the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, Dr. Christopher Murray said, “People who shrug off weight gain do so at their own risk – risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and other life threatening conditions.

The study, which looked at 195 countries and territories over a period of 35 years, from 1980 to 2015, revealed that 30 per cent of the world’s population – 2.2 billion children and adults – are affected by excess weight.
This includes nearly 108 million children and more than 600 million adults who are categorised as a having a BMI of higher than 30 and therefore medically defined as obese. Obesity has been increasing around the globe since 1980, doubling in more than 70 countries.

The United States, U.S. has the highest level of obesity among adults and children, at nearly 13 per cent of the population. Egypt on its part, topped the list for adult obesity, at about 35 per cent.

In Nigeria, obesity is fast becoming a health concern especially among the elite in cities. The indulgent lifestyles of this class of people makes them vulnerable to obesity and its attendant health issues.

Marriage Boosts Healthy Living - Study

A new study has shown that marriage appears to be good for health, boosting chances of survival, especially for people with a major heart risk factor such as high cholesterol. According to the researchers, a loving spouse might spur you on to look after yourself better. This was disclosed at the British Cardiovascular Society conference, based on their study of nearly a million adults in the United Kingdom (UK).

Although, all of the participants had high blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes, the married ones fared much better than those who were single. Dr. Paul Carter and colleagues at Aston Medical School in the UK, who carried out the research, have already shown that marriage is linked to a better chance of surviving a heart attack.

Their latest research hints at why this might be. They suspect marriage helps buffer against big heart disease risk factors, including cholesterol and high blood pressure. Similarly, the protective effect was put down to increased social support and care, such as your spouse nagging you to make lifestyle changes and take medication. Last year, the same team behind this study were part of a group that found married people were more likely to survive a heart attack.

Marriage, also called matrimony or wedlock, is a socially or ritually recognised union between spouses that establishes rights and obligations between them, between them and their children, and between them and their in-laws. Marriage can be recognized by a state, an organisation, a religious authority, a tribal group, a local community, or peers.

It is often viewed as a contract. The study looked at deaths from all causes, including heart disease. Men and women in their 50s, 60s and 70s with high cholesterol were 16 per cent more likely to be alive at the end of the 14-year study if they were married rather than single.

The same was true for diabetes and high blood pressure, with married people having a survival advantage. The picture was less clear for people cohabiting, separated, divorced or widowed. Also, the researchers did not test if the wedded people were in happy marriages.

They suspect having someone special in your life is what’s important, rather than simply getting hitched. Carter said: “We need to unpick the underlying reasons a bit more, but it appears there’s something about being married that is protective, not only in patients with heart disease but also those with heart disease risk factors. “We’re not saying that everyone should get married though.

“We need to replicate the positive effects of marriage and use friends, family and social support networks in the same way.” Dr. Mike Knapton, of the British Heart Foundation, said: “The take-home message is that our social interactions, as well as medical risk factors such as high blood pressure, are important determinants of both our health and wellbeing.

“Whether you are married or not, if you have any of the main risk factors for heart disease, then you can call upon loved ones to help you to manage them.”
