Some Causes Of Obesity To Beware Of

Lack of Energy Balance

A lack of energy balance most often causes overweight and obesity. Energy balance means that your energy IN equals your energy OUT.
Energy IN is the amount of energy or calories you get from food and drinks. Energy OUT is the amount of energy your body uses for things like breathing, digesting, and being physically active.
To maintain a healthy weight, your energy IN and OUT don't have to balance exactly every day. It's the balance over time that helps you maintain a healthy weight.
  • The same amount of energy IN and energy OUT over time = weight stays the same
  • More energy IN than energy OUT over time = weight gain
  • More energy OUT than energy IN over time = weight loss
Overweight and obesity happen over time when you take in more calories than you use.

Other Causes

An Inactive Lifestyle

Many Nigerian are not very physically active. One reason for this is that many people spend hours in front of TVs and computers doing work, schoolwork, and leisure activities. In fact, more than 2 hours a day of regular TV viewing time has been linked to overweight and obesity.
Other reasons for not being active include: relying on cars instead of walking, fewer physical demands at work or at home because of modern technology and conveniences, and lack of physical education classes in schools.
People who are inactive are more likely to gain weight because they don't burn the calories that they take in from food and drinks. An inactive lifestyle also raises your risk for coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, colon cancer, and other health problems.

Environment

Our environment doesn't support healthy lifestyle habits; in fact, it encourages obesity. Some reasons include:
  • Lack of neighborhood sidewalks and safe places for recreation. Not having area parks, trails, sidewalks, and affordable gyms makes it hard for people to be physically active.
  • Work schedules. People often say that they don't have time to be physically active because of long work hours and time spent commuting.
  • Oversized food portions. Nigerians living in cities are exposed to huge food portions in restaurants, fast food places, petrol stations, movie theaters, supermarkets, and even at home. Some of these meals and snacks can feed two or more people. Eating large portions means too much energy IN. Over time, this will cause weight gain if it isn't balanced with physical activity.
  • Lack of access to healthy foods. Some people don't live in neighborhoods that have supermarkets that sell healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. Or, for some people, these healthy foods are too costly.
  • Food advertising. Nigerians are surrounded by ads from food companies. Often children are the targets of advertising for high-calorie, high-fat snacks and sugary drinks. The goal of these ads is to sway people to buy these high-calorie foods, and often they do.

Genes and Family History

Studies of identical twins who have been raised apart show that genes have a strong influence on a person's weight. Overweight and obesity tend to run in families. Your chances of being overweight are greater if one or both of your parents are overweight or obese.
Your genes also may affect the amount of fat you store in your body and where on your body you carry the extra fat. Because families also share food and physical activity habits, a link exists between genes and the environment.
Children adopt the habits of their parents. A child who has overweight parents who eat high-calorie foods and are inactive will likely become overweight too. However, if the family adopts healthy food and physical activity habits, the child's chance of being overweight or obese is reduced.

Health Conditions

Some hormone problems may cause overweight and obesity, such as underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), Cushing's syndrome, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Underactive thyroid is a condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't make enough thyroid hormone. Lack of thyroid hormone will slow down your metabolism and cause weight gain. You'll also feel tired and weak.
Cushing's syndrome is a condition in which the body's adrenal glands make too much of the hormone cortisol. Cushing's syndrome also can develop if a person takes high doses of certain medicines, such as prednisone, for long periods.
People who have Cushing's syndrome gain weight, have upper-body obesity, a rounded face, fat around the neck, and thin arms and legs.
PCOS is a condition that affects about 5–10 percent of women of childbearing age. Women who have PCOS often are obese, have excess hair growth, and have reproductive problems and other health issues. These problems are caused by high levels of hormones called androgens.

Medicines

Certain medicines may cause you to gain weight. These medicines include some corticosteroids, antidepressants, and seizure medicines.
These medicines can slow the rate at which your body burns calories, increase your appetite, or cause your body to hold on to extra water. All of these factors can lead to weight gain.

Emotional Factors

Some people eat more than usual when they're bored, angry, or stressed. Over time, overeating will lead to weight gain and may cause overweight or obesity.

Smoking

Some people gain weight when they stop smoking. One reason is that food often tastes and smells better after quitting smoking.
Another reason is because nicotine raises the rate at which your body burns calories, so you burn fewer calories when you stop smoking. However, smoking is a serious health risk, and quitting is more important than possible weight gain.

Age

As you get older, you tend to lose muscle, especially if you're less active. Muscle loss can slow down the rate at which your body burns calories. If you don't reduce your calorie intake as you get older, you may gain weight.
Midlife weight gain in women is mainly due to aging and lifestyle, but menopause also plays a role. Many women gain about 5 pounds during menopause and have more fat around the waist than they did before.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy, women gain weight to support their babies’ growth and development. After giving birth, some women find it hard to lose the weight. This may lead to overweight or obesity, especially after a few pregnancies.

Lack of Sleep

Research shows that lack of sleep increases the risk of obesity. For example, one study of teenagers showed that with each hour of sleep lost, the odds of becoming obese went up. Lack of sleep increases the risk of obesity in other age groups as well.
People who sleep fewer hours also seem to prefer eating foods that are higher in calories and carbohydrates, which can lead to overeating, weight gain, and obesity.
Sleep helps maintain a healthy balance of the hormones that make you feel hungry (ghrelin) or full (leptin). When you don't get enough sleep, your level of ghrelin goes up and your level of leptin goes down. This makes you feel hungrier than when you're well-rested.
Sleep also affects how your body reacts to insulin, the hormone that controls your blood glucose (sugar) level. Lack of sleep results in a higher than normal blood sugar level, which may increase your risk for diabetes.

How To Exercise When You Are Diabetic

Everybody who is health conscious  naturally wants to carry out one form of exercise on the other in other to keep fit. Even those with health conditions are not left out. In this piece, we look at how those with diabetes can exercise. If you are diabetic, it is even more important to choose an exercise that is safe. You should warm up and cool down for about 5-10 minutes. This will help your body adjust so you’re not rushing into anything or pull a muscle. Always stretch your muscles before beginning your exercise, and drink water, before, during, and after you exercise. Do not exercise in very cold or very hot weather.
You should check your blood sugar each time before exercise; if your blood sugar is too high, you should not do any exercise until it comes down. Exercise can lower blood sugar levels up to 24 hours. If it is too low, you may need to have a snack before starting.
To learn when and how much to snack, use this chart:

The Natural Way To Prevent Or Cure "Jedi Jedi"

For most people in Nigeria, it is called "Jedi jedi" but its clinical name is piles or hemorrhoids. Many people suffer from hemorrhoids, which can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Hemorrhoids usually occur when the veins around the anus become distended due to constipation, childbirth, heavy lifting, or long periods of sitting.

Typical symptoms include itching and irritation around the anus area. In some cases, as the condition becomes progressively worse, there may be bleeding. The good news is that hemorrhoids can be managed and reduced or eliminated without expensive surgery.

There are a number of natural cures for hemorrhoids. One of these is to simply change your diet. Avoid eating fatty foods, like deep fried meats or fast-food hamburgers, and cut down on the heavy use of alcohol. Start eating more fiber to help soften the stool. This will reduce the strain required to evacuate your bowels and reduce the pressure on your internal veins within the anal cavity. Another simple cure is to drink more water. Drinking at least eight glasses of water each day, cleans your intestinal walls and facilitates bowel movements.

Other dietary treatments for hemorrhoids include taking vitamin C, which helps maintain the integrity of your veins, and eating more flavonoids and anthocyanins to strengthen your veins. Sources of flavonoids include lemons, limes, apples, tomatoes, onions and carrots; sources of anthocyanins include dark, red berries, blueberries, cherries, grapes and red cabbage. Another natural food remedy for hemorrhoids is eating a banana on an empty stomach every day. For bleeding hemorrhoids, eat three bananas daily, or try steamed dried persimmons.

A soothing, natural cure for hemorrhoids is taking 15-minute warm baths. This will not only relive some of the pain and irritation but will help shrink hemorrhoids. Be sure to dry the hemorrhoid area to keep moisture from the swollen tissue. A hemorrhoids cream or ointment can reduce the burning sensation on the affected area. Ointments containing aloe vera are recommended. Be sure to gently clean the affected area twice daily with the hemorrhoid cream.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a number of treatments for hemorrhoids without the side effects of Western pharmacological remedies. Among the most popular TCM treatment is Ginkgo. Also known as Ginkgo Biloba, Japanese silver apricot and maidenhair tree, this popular Chinese herbal supplement has been used in China for several thousand years to effectively treat hemorrhoids. Another Chinese medication is Bu Zhon Yi Qi Wan. Taken in pill form--8 to 10 pills three times a day for one month--can offer some relief. Finally, try Fel Ursi Hemorrhoid Ointment (Xiong Dan Zhi Chuang Gao) to shrink hemorrhoids and relieve symptoms.

For bleeding hemorrhoids, TCM also suggests musk hemorrhoids ointment, which should be applied topically to the affected area. Gargelin extra has been shown to work as well, as it serves to strengthen the veins. Three or four tablets three times a day is the recommended dosage.

While some natural methods may reduce the symptoms of hemorrhoids, you should consult with your doctor before attempting any natural cure.

Body Massaging Car Seats Trending In Nigerian Auto Market

The Nigerian automotive industry is witnessing a new trend in comfort and a little bit of ease in the seat area of the car. A possibility to achieve a competitive advantage in the automotive industry is the development of car seats for people who love comfort ( Looze et al.,). Today, there are many possibilities of relieving the strain for drivers and achieving well being driving long distances. To achieve more seat comfort, special attention is given to for instance the seat form, noise, odour, user friendliness and smooth “appealing” surfaces (Bronkhorst et al.). An additional idea is the introduction of massage seats to increase the level of well being or comfort experience in the car. However, the question is whether it has any objective and subjective positive effects on drivers and passengers.
There are some indications that a massage seat could have positive effects. Helander describes that blood circulation in sitting is very important for well being and feeling comfortable. In general there is belief that movement is important to reduce discomfort (Dieen et al). Fujimaki et al shows that there is a relationship between discomfort in time and pressure distribution. They also describe a relationship with body movement and EMG in short-term sitting.
In a vehicle, particularly in a car, it is difficult to move during the journey, as the person has to concentrate on traffic conditions and steering. This restricts the design of seats stimulating movement. Besides a car seat has to support the body due to acceleration, slowing, and in curves when driving. The driver/passenger is in someway fixed and therefore spends a certain time in an unchanged position.
These considerations indicate that it could be meaningful to integrate a massage activity system (MAS) into a car seat.
Investigations by Nigeria Natural Health Online reveal that some car brands in Nigeria are already installing these massaging seats in their current models. In our subsequent report, we will run an expose of these brands and how much they sell in the Nigerian automotive market.

Why You Must Drink That Glass Of Warm Water Now

Most of us start our mornings with a fresh, hot cup of coffee or tea to warm our bodies after getting out of bed. When we drink water, we tend to prefer it cold, but according to Ayurvedic medicine, we have it all wrong. Regularly drinking very warm water, especially in the morning, can heal our bodies, providing digestive power and reducing metabolic waste that could have built up in our immune system.
“Physicians recommend drinking warm water in the morning, usually, with a polyphenol-rich lemon immersion, or with a tea shown to decrease free radical activity in the body,” Stella Metsovas, clinical nutritionist and media health expert in Food and Nutrition Sciences, told Medical Daily. The consumption of warm water increases the tightening of the intestines, which optimizes elimination. Unlike hot water, processed cold water is devoid of many essential minerals that could become very unfavorable to the digestive tract when consuming a meal. For cold water drinkers, Metsovas recommends refraining from drinking 20 minutes before eating — even if the source is natural spring water.
While drinking warm water may not suit your taste buds, it may be beneficial to put the caffeine and tea aside for your health's sake. Here are six reasons why:

1. Cleanses Digestion

A very warm cup of water in the morning can help cleanse your body by flushing out toxins. Water and other liquids help break down the food in your stomach and keep the digestive system on track. Warm water will help break down these foods even faster, making them easier for you to digest. Drinking cold water during or after a meal can actually harden the oil in consumed foods and therefore create a fat deposit in the intestine. Adding ice to processed cold water will strip it of natural-containing minerals, says Metsovas, as these minerals are essential to keeping the digestive tract healthy. Luckily, you can replace a glass of cold water with a warm one to aid digestion, especially after eating a meal.

2. Alleviate Constipation

At one point or another, many of us are plagued by this common stomach problem where we have little to no bowel movement. The strain felt during elimination, accompanied by bloating, is brought on by a lack of water in the body. Drinking very warm water in the morning on an empty stomach can help improve bowel movements and alleviate constipation while breaking down foods as they smoothly pass through the intestines. Stimulating the bowels will help return your body back to normal functioning.

3. Alleviates Pain

Warm water, considered to be nature’s most powerful home remedy, can help alleviate pain from menstruation to headaches. The heat from warm water is known to have a calming and soothing effect on the abdominal muscles, which can help provide instant relief for cramps and muscle spasms. According to Healthline, warm or hot water is usually better for cramps, as hot liquids increase blood flow to the skin and help relax the cramped muscles.

4. Sheds Excess Pounds

If you’re on a diet, chances are you’ve heard drinking a glass of warm water first thing in the morning can help with weight loss. Warm water increases body temperature, which therefore increases the metabolic rate. An increase in metabolic rate allows the body to burn more calories throughout the rate. It can also help the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys to function even better.
“Physicians recommend drinking warm water in the morning, usually, with a polyphenol-rich lemon immersion, or with a tea shown to decrease free radical activity in the body,” said Metsovas to Medical Daily. Drinking a glass of warm water and a lemon will help break down the adipose tissue, or body fat, in your body, and also control food craving due to lemon’s pectin fiber.

5. Improves Blood Circulation

The fat deposits in the body are eliminated along with accumulating deposits in the nervous system when you drink a glass of warm water. This flushes out the toxins that are circulating throughout the body and then enhances blood circulation. Making sure the muscles are relaxed will eliminate poor circulation and blood flow.

6. Halts Premature Aging

Premature aging is a woman’s worst nightmare, but luckily, this can be prevented by drinking warm water. The presence of toxins in the body can lead to aging faster, but warm water can help cleanse the body from those toxins, while repairing skin cells to increase elasticity. Metsovas told Medical Daily: “Women will always benefit because they [have] more hormones to contend with, making constipation more of an issue.”
To reap the health benefits of warm water, drink it every morning plain or with a lemon for taste. Metsovas urges drinkers to have warm water, as drinking straight hot water can potentially be damaging to tissue in the mouth and esophagus. After boiling water, be sure to let it cool for a few minutes before you start consuming.  Also, “always check with your prescribing physician before drinking warm water if you’re on any medications that could impact the efficacy of your medications,” Metsovas said.

Some Medicinal Facts You Need To Know About Lemongrass

Description

What makes it so effective in many medical condition is that it has certain anti-septic compounds that effectively kill the harmful micro-organisms (bacteria, yeast, fungal, parasites, etc.) in the digestive tract, YET preserving the beneficial bacteria.
For a healthy digestive tract, lemongrass is made into therapeutic tea that is drunk regularly to see its efficacy:
Anemia:  Thanks to its high content in iron, which is essential for the synthesis of hemoglobin (the protein in red cells responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body) lemongrass is helpful for various types of anemia, especially those resulting from iron deficiency.
Anti-cancer:  A study was done to show that lemongrass contains citral, an anti-cancer property that could cause cancer cells to die, yet preserves the healthy tissues. However, this does not mean that drinking lemongrass juice/tea alone will heal your cancer; it helps.
Anti-inflammatory and anti-septic:  Due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties, lemongrass juice can be used as a valuable aid for treating arthritis, gout and inflammation of the urinary tract.
Bacterial or fungal infection:  Thanks to its anti-septic properties, drinking lemongrass tea for a season helps to eliminate the bad micro-organism, detoxify and purify the blood, keeping bacterial, fungal or yeast infections in check.
Balsamic action:  Due to its content in volatile oils, lemongrass has a beneficial, balsamic action on the respiratory tract. So it can be used to relieve the symptoms associated with flu, cold and hay fever.

It helps to cleanse and purify the liver, kidneys, bladder, pancreas and increases blood circulation. The diuretic effect helps carry out the toxins from the process to be eliminated effectively.
Diabetes:  The purifying and cleansing effect of lemongrass tea help to cleanse/detoxify the pancreas and improve its functions, thus lowering blood sugar level in diabetics.
Digestive health:  Lemongrass helps regulate intestinal function and motility due to its anti-microbial properties. It helps to kill bad bacteria and parasites, repopulate the good bacteria in the colon, thus assisting to improve digestive-related problems like: indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, intestinal bloating, flatulence, stomach spasms, vomiting and cramps.
Gastritis or Heartburn:  A warm mug of lemongrass tea can be very soothing when having gastritis or acid indigestion. Drinking the tea therapeutically will gradually reduce the recurrence of both gastritis and heartburn.
High blood pressure:  The high potassium content promotes diuresis, thereby helping to lower and regulate blood pressure. Regularly drinking lemongrass tea is encouraged.
High cholesterol:  Lemongrass has an anti-cholesterol and anti-atherosclerosis action. It helps reduce both the absorption of cholesterol from the intestine, as well as the oxidation of LDL-cholesterol in the blood, thus preventing one of the first steps in the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
Insomnia:  Insomnia happens due to internal chemical imbalance or nervous disorders. The purifying activities and calming effect of lemongrass help improve sleep.
Nervous system:  Magnesium, phosphorous and folate are important nutrients needed for healthy functioning of the nervous system. They help improve concentration, memory and the brain’s ability to process information.
Purifying action:  Perhaps the most characteristic action of lemongrass is its purifying effect on the whole body, since it helps eliminate toxins from the body by enhancing the cleansing of the colon.
Skin health:  When blood is purified, circulation is improved, skin health will follow suit. Regularly drinking lemongrass tea helps to improve acne problem, eczema and psoriasis.
Weight loss:  Drinking lemongrass tea helps to melt fats in a detoxifying manner. The diuretic effect helps carry out the wastes in high volume, effectively and quickly, resulting in weight loss.
